Star Wars Episode II, DVD, "MD-2012" Bootleg, China 2002

Here is a rip of the official NTSC DVD, compressed to a single layer disc. This caused a bit of hoopla when it surfaced, as the release date of the official disc was still two months away. Someone somewhere got hold of an early copy and wasted no time spreading it on the internets. This disc was manufactured in september 2002, the official DVD wasn't released until november the same year.
Naturally, the image comes in anamorphic widescreen, with English Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. The options menu lists Spanish and French audio, but those aren't on the disc. Though the menu doesn't list them, there are subtitles for English (Hard-of-Hearing), and two tracks both marked as Chinese (I've included some sample shots of the subs below). Alien languages have no on-screen subtitles, so you'll have to enable the English HoH subs for that. The THX optimizer was also removed, as was all DVD-ROM functionality, though they are still listed on the menus. The only "extra" left on the disc is the audio commentary. This disc is bit-for bit identical to this bootleg. The VOB-files are exactly the same. No honour among thieves. Since they are identical, the below screenshots are from that release. You know, it strikes me that all the bootlegs have better looking covers than the official release. Drew Struzan's poster art can't be beat. And as usual the bootleggers weren't sweating the details on the cover art, as you can see from the critic's quote on the back. What? DeNiro and Eddie Murphy are in this??!! (Would have been interesting, though.) The heavy grain on the cover is just the coarse plastic of the case. It actually feels kind of nice to the touch. As a collector I can appreciate even the tactile differences between bootlegs! |
