The Empire Strikes Back, Widescreen, Laserdisc, CBS/Fox video, 1989

This is the first widescreen edition Laserdisc of The Empire Strikes Back issued in the US. The transfer is based on the Japanese Special Collection release from 1987. The film is spread over 3 sides, making this a 2-disc release. The accompanying gatefold jakcet follows the "Special Widescreen Edition" design and layout which was standard for CBS/Fox at the time.

The letterboxing preserves the entire movie frame, but at a cost. With much of the screen real estate taken up by the black bars, there wasn't room for much image detail left. The limited resolution of the NTSC signal makes the scan lines of Luke's binoculars merge into a shimmering moiré pattern (discernible on the screenshot below). Audio is PCM 2.0 matrixed surround, which was state-of-the-art for home cinema at the time.

At the end of side 3 you get the FBI Warning and a colour bar test pattern. Side 4 has the usual "Program material is recorded only on the other side of this laser videodisc."

These Widescreen Collection discs were reprinted in large quantities, many times, and remained in stock long after they were subplanted by the 1993 THX remasters. They therefore show up shrinkwrapped quite frequently.
