Return of the Jedi, Widescreen, Laserdisc, CBS/Fox video, 1989
|
In 1989, Return of the Jedi was released in Widescreen in the US for the first time. The master was sourced from the Japanese Special Collection release from 1987. On the Japanese discs, the letterboxed image was shifted above center to accomodate the Japanese subtitles, and this was not changed for the US release of Jedi (though they centered the image on Star Wars and Empire). Audio was the original English Dolby Pro-logic-encoded surround sound, in Digital PCM.
The film runs over two hours, so had to be split across three sides. Side 3 runs under 30 minutes and was therefore encoded in the CAV format, enabling steady stillframes, frame-by-frame advance and other trick-play functions. Side four has the standard "Program Material..." message. Comes in a nice gatefold jacket, with interior artwork and some production info. These were reprinted in large quantities many times, and shrinkwrapped copies are not uncommon. Excess stock was still floating around when the more desirable THX remasters were issued four years later. |
