Star Wars Special Edition, VCD, VideoCD 2.0, China 1997

Bootleg VCD of the 1997 special edition version of Star Wars. The image is in widescreen with yellow Chinese subtitles in the lower letterbox band. The files on the discs are dated Dec. 1997, so that informs the approximate release year of this set.

VideoCD 2.0 refers to the "company" releasing these. Their logo is on the menu screen of the discs, and on the slipcases, claiming "The latest high-tech 2.0 compression" (according to Google Translate).

I had originally thought these were rips of the official VCD releases from Hong Kong, but they turned out to be ports of the US Special Edition Laserdisc box set, complete with the Dolby Digital and THX Laserdisc trailers at the beginning. For the parts with alien subtitled languages, the Chinese subtitles are just superimposed over the English subs.

The bootleggers were quite creative with their artwork. Wonder whose face they superimposed on Mark Hamill's body?

These came in paper sleeves, designed to fit round a regular CD jewel case. You had to supply the jewel case yourself.
