This is the Norwegian sell-through tape, widely available for purchase EVERYWHERE at the time of its release.
In Norway, the VHS was only issued in Widescreen. The movie retains its original English language but has Norwegian subtitles. The beginning crawl has also been recreated in Norwegian for this release, which is very rare in Norway. The fact that the Norwegian distributor took the time and expense to produce a local version of the crawl speaks to the high profile nature of this home video release. It could also imply that the intended audience were children, but if that was the case they would have created a local dub as well, like they did for the first two Harry Potter films around the same time. No such dub was ever made for any Star Wars (non-animated) film. The Phantom Menace on home video was a major event, and no expenses were spared. Note how the gold printing matches the gold Amaray case. A nice touch. There's also a rental version of this, which is almost indistinguishable from the sell-through tape. The case and inlay are almost exactly the same. The only difference is the UPC code and the small text on the back specifying for rental or for sale. The label on the tape also specifies rental or sale, as well as the copyright notice before the film. |
