Episode III on VHS was released at the tail-end of the format's life cycle. The film comes in cropped "fullscreen" format with Hi-Fi stereo sound. The tape starts with a new THX logo, different from the one on previous THX tapes ("The science of Sensation"). Peculiarly, this THX logo comes before the copyright notice. Also, there is no "20th Century Fox Home Entertainment" logo at the start, the film goes straight from the copyright notice into the start of the film. The end credits are letterboxed, and not squeezed as they are on the other fullscreen releases of the Star Wars films, and the letterboxing starts on the shot before the credits begin. (See screenshot below.)
Note that rental tapes in the UK have bigger boxes than the sell-trough tapes. This is to help differentiate them in stores and ensure that rental tapes are not sold to the public. Rental places are generally allowed to sell off excess stock once the movie's popularity dwindles. According to the sticker on the front of the tape, this one came from a store named Videostar, Hove, UK. By their very nature, rental tapes are hard to come by. In most cases they are heavily worn, the box may have been replaced and they are usually marred by stickers identifying the rental store, their stock number and/or the usual "rewind me!". I bought this tape on eBay in 2009. It probably didn't see much action, as both the cover and the tape are in near pristine shape. |
