The Empire Strikes Back, VHS, Fox Video UK, 1994
|
1994 saw the Star Wars trilogy released on VHS in so-called "Digitally remastered" editions in the UK. I assume this means the 1993 THX masters were used. The films were issued in both Widescreen and Pan&Scan editions concurrently. Note that they are now issued under the Fox Video label. Empire and Jedi still have the CBS/Fox logo on the case and before the films, but Star Wars does not.
The films are presented in cropped "fullscreen" versions, with original English Hi-Fi audio. Note that the binocular shots are letterboxed and not cropped. Before the film you get a short trailer promoting the newly "Digitally remastered" editions. There are no other additional features on the tape. These particular releases are highly regarded for their use of alternative poster art as well as the high quality print with silver accents. The inside of the sleeves on the widescreen versions feature a nice layout of stills and factoids from the films, but these fullscreen releases just have the same promotion for other Fox releases. It makes the fullscreen releases seem less prestige than the widescreen ones. |
