Star Wars, VHS, Fullscreen, 20th Century-Fox video, USA 1982

The rental library version was released in May 1982 on VHS and Betamax. The tape had a rental-only window until September of that year, but many retailers jumped the gun and sold them early.

The tape opens directly on the 20th Century Fox logo and goes straight into the film. The FBI warning appears at the end of the tape only. Even here, on the very first release of Star Wars to home video, the crawl includes the "Episode IV" title. The crawl and the opening shot of the Star Destroyer are not squeezed as they are on many of the European early video releases.

You'll note the sticker in the lower, right corner of the back. All these rental copies carried individual serial numbers to help track them. There should be a corresponding sticker on the rear flap of the cassette, but it has been removed on my copy. You can see the sticker residue on the flap.

These show up every so often, and almost always in excellent physical condition, as the box was made of sturdy plastic, and the inlay is sealed inside.
