The Empire Strikes Back, Laserdisc (CAV), CBS/Fox video, 1985

This CAV Laserdisc version of Empire enabled the viewer to freeze-frame and step forward/back the entire film to study the effects work. The image appears more saturated when compared to the 1984 CLV version, but the base transfer looks to be the same.

The CAV encoding (referred to as "Standard play") was generally accepted as yielding better picture quality, but at the expense of convenience - the film had to be spread to five sides across three platters.

These don't show up too often and are comparatively rare to the regular CLV ("Extended play") edition. A similar CAV edition of Return of the Jedi was never issued in the USA.
